Model UN-New Silk Way: The UN Security Council Discussion of Elections in Afghanistan “Upcoming Presidential Elections in Afghanistan” 26.03.2019 12:02

March 29, 2019. Narxoz University will host a round table discussion on the presidential elections in Afghanistan as part of the Model UN-New Silk Way (MUN NSW) conference series.

The initiative of the round table comes from the Model UN-New Silk Way program, the Department of Public Administration of the Narxoz University, the Qazaq-Afghan Association for Development and Partnership “AFGQAZ”, Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development and Afghan students from different universities in Almaty.

It is important to note that this round table attracts representatives of various universities involved in the training of international students, including the Afghan students. During the event, it is expected to discuss the upcoming presidential elections in Afghanistan, as well as their impact on the political stability in the New Silk Way region.

The head of state in Afghanistan is elected on the basis of universal, secret and direct voting for a term of five years and can be re-elected for a second term. The current President of the country Mr. Ashraf Ghani was elected on June 14, 2014, and took office on September 29, 2014.

The government of Afghanistan hopes that the upcoming elections will be free and fair, and will show the world that Afghanistan is a sovereign country with strong political institutions. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) intends to continue to coordinate the issues of support to the electoral institutions of Afghanistan by the international community in order to ensure the holding of transparent and fair elections. During the event, the entire palette of Kazakhstan’s approaches at the UN Security Council in building peace in Afghanistan will also be presented.

In particular, the participants of the round table will discuss issues of primary importance on how the presidential elections in Afghanistan are expected to be held, and the complex intra-political and geopolitical situation around the upcoming elections.

Thus, the event will be an excellent opportunity to put into practice the accumulated experience, the use of the most effective forms of training of international specialists in Kazakhstan.

Agenda: Elections in Afghanistan, political stability on the New Silk Way, youth and sustainable development, the media and youth, the contribution of Kazakhstan to the training of Afghan youth, the work of Kazakhstan in the UN Security Council.
